Still Life
With more than 3,000 patients the psychiatric hospital of Mombello, in the north of the country, was one of the most important in Italy. Even Benito Mussolini’s secret son spent some time and died here, under the alias of Albino Bernardi.
After the Basaglia law that, in 1979, brought to the closure of all the psychiatric hospitals, the asylum was slowly dismissed.
Now it is totally dismissed. Yet, walking through its abandoned corridors, looking at the objects leaved here by patients, nurses and doctors you can still feel their presence. You feel that here, despite the years gone by, there’s still life. | Former Psychiatric Hospital - Mombello (Italy) © Alberto Ostini
